Rolf’s Updates – My Priorities in Life – Health, Finance, Family, Friends & Hobbies – 2019 1Q

Hi all, it’s been a while since I am online blogging. This does not mean that I stop writing and sharing. In fact, I have written as many articles about life since the last 2.5 years, but in a more privately manner sharing within my own circle of friends.

This week, I took a leave to relax and spend time with my family during school holiday. I was prompted intuitively to update my blog. Here I am, my first article in 2019 based on my 5 priorities in life that I blogged about many times in the past - H2F3.

Health

Generally very good with no sickness except slower muscle recovery from post-exercising. No complains overall.

Family

As like previous year, I am still living happily with a household of eight. Me and wife are supporting our 4 kids, parent and helper. The kids are undoubtedly the biggest joy to our lives. No amount of wealth can exchange for it. Wife is still busy at work, which is not good. Ideally and when time is ripe, we both agree that she be a household champion. Parenting has become a major part of my life. Time spent in kids’ discipline, school work and enrichment lessons are sufficient to keep us super busy. I also spend lots of time to train my kids in table tennis, and I am proud that my primary schooler is in school team.

Financial

Career
I am still in the same company and by God’s grace, company is doing really well compared to many companies who is still struggling within the marine and offshore sector. I am extremely busy lately with many new initiatives planned for growth. I still travel quite often. The best thing I like about my work, is to meet people from all over the world and to develop a good relationships with them. I must say, I am pretty successful with regards to this. Definitely not as successful in growing my salary though!

Investments / loan
Portfolio wise, I accumulated more cash last year without any major investment aside from paying down more of my mortgage debts monthly. I am currently 45% cash, 35% metals, with the rest in stocks and bonds (cpf excluded). I also own a tiny bits of Bitcoin, since it is no longer the “talk about topic” now. I like to buy when it is “unloved”! I have no debts except my mortgage debt comfortably at 40% of property sale value. Another property of mine is providing rental income.

Preparing for recession
It’s been >10 years since the last recession. This has been one of the longest period between recession years. While not hoping for a financial crisis, I reckon one in the near future is inevitable. Be it 1 yr, 2 yrs, 5 yrs, or even within the next 10 yrs, but WHEN it is going to happen is not so important. What’s more important is if you are already well-prepared, both financially and mentally? Financially I am ready due to the cash I am accumulating. Career wise, I have also acquired skills in different market sectors outside O&G and also developed some capability for freelancing outside my normal work skills. Mentally, I have been very patient for the last 2.5 yrs accumulating cash and hoarding precious metals without any significant investments in stocks. I have no itch to change that until crisis. Bear in mind, that doing nothing is not as easy as you think. PATIENCE! Investment skill-wise, I am thankful of my humble knowledge acquired and experience over the years.

Charitable acts
There are always people in need of help. I had also apportioned a part of money for charitable acts each month.

Friends

Friends are very important to me. Gatherings nowadays are normally done at home. I love hanging out with friends either together with my family or being out on men’s night drinking beer and watching football or just 1-to-1 catch up. Most are friends of decades and in recent years, I also added a whole lot of very good brothers and sisters as a result of Godly fellowships. These relationships are invaluable to me.

Hobbies

I started playing table tennis again more than ½ year ago. The last time was about 10 years ago when I was playing for my GRC. During my younger days, I use to be pretty good representing the nation at one stage, and having representation for school from primary to university level. I had since my touch a bit. Anyway, it started mainly because of coaching for my kids, but my circle of friends also grow because of the game.  I still frequent gym to keep fit and maintain my body, but with less intensity. Age is catching up. Swimming is usually with the kids for bonding. I did a lot of reading, researching and writing still, but almost all is related to the bible and life.

Ok, enough said. I prayed for the blessings of love, peace and joy be upon all my friends and readers here. Family is calling me for dinner….. Bye. 🙂

  3. Hi Rolf,

It is inspirational to hear that you are doing well in an industry (O&G) that has been in the doldrums in recent years. I hear stories of retrenchment in your industry and the negativity from people is similar to what I hear in the electronics industry. Instead of blaming themselves for their predicament, they blame the industry. Each of us has the freedom of choice to get out of a lousy place, change industry , find a better company within the same industry etc. Instead of blaming uncontrollable external factors, those who are not doing well should focus on actions that they can control to get out of the hole that they are in.
